Blood transfusions guided by how you feel, not just lab numbers
NCT ID NCT07328191
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether using a simple quality-of-life questionnaire to decide when to give blood transfusions can reduce the number of transfusions needed for people with advanced myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) or acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who are receiving palliative care. Currently, transfusions are given based on hemoglobin levels, but this may not always improve how patients feel. The trial will compare the standard approach with a new one that uses weekly patient-reported well-being scores. About 52 adults will take part, and researchers will track transfusion counts, quality of life, and survival over two months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
red blood cell transfusions guided by a quality-of-life questionnaire
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a more personalized way to manage anemia in advanced blood cancers, reducing unnecessary transfusions while keeping patients comfortable.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 52 participants. The quality-of-life approach may not reduce transfusions or could miss signs that a transfusion is needed, and results may not apply to all patients.
