Dead teeth revived with pulp transplant in small trial

NCT ID NCT07258888

First seen Dec 10, 2025 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 32 times

Summary

This study tested whether transplanting pulp tissue from a healthy tooth into a dead one could restore vitality. Twenty-one adults with dead single-rooted teeth received either a pulp transplant, a pulp transplant with growth factors, or standard root canal treatment. The goal was to see if the treated teeth would respond to electrical stimulation, indicating nerve regrowth. Results are preliminary and more research is needed.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

autologous dental pulp transplantation

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a way to restore feeling in dead teeth, avoiding root canals and keeping the tooth alive.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study with only 21 people. The procedure requires a healthy donor tooth, and long-term success is uncertain. Risks include pain, infection, or the transplant not working.
