Tooth blood test could tell if a root canal is really needed

NCT ID NCT07658742

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 31, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether substances in the blood from a tooth's pulp can help dentists tell the difference between reversible pulpitis (a mild inflammation that can heal) and irreversible pulpitis (severe damage needing a root canal). Researchers will collect a small sample of pulp blood during routine dental treatment from 75 healthy people aged 12–35. They will measure levels of various inflammatory and other biomarkers and compare them across healthy teeth, reversible pulpitis, and irreversible pulpitis. The goal is to find biomarkers that improve diagnostic accuracy and guide treatment decisions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a more accurate diagnostic test for pulpitis, helping dentists decide when a root canal is truly needed.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study with a small sample size (75 teeth). The biomarkers may not prove reliable enough for routine clinical use.
