Nerve stimulation maintenance: monthly or as needed for bladder control?
NCT ID NCT03136601
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested two ways of scheduling maintenance therapy for overactive bladder using percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS). 37 women who had already completed 12 weekly PTNS sessions were assigned to either monthly treatments or sessions only when they felt they needed them. The goal was to see how each schedule affected quality of life and satisfaction, and to check if a larger trial is feasible.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) maintenance therapy
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help determine the best schedule for PTNS maintenance to manage overactive bladder symptoms effectively.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small feasibility study with only 37 participants, so results may not apply widely. The comparison is about timing, not a new treatment.
