Can a shot of your own blood cells boost hip surgery results?

NCT ID NCT03909139

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether adding platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) to standard hip labral repair surgery helps people recover better. About 400 adults with hip labral tears will be randomly assigned to get surgery alone or surgery plus one of these cell-based treatments. The goal is to see if these additions improve hip function and slow down arthritis.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a way to improve hip function and reduce arthritis progression after labral repair.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with 400 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Adding PRP or BMAC may not provide extra benefit over standard surgery.
