New combo therapy aims to shrink aggressive prostate cancer before surgery
NCT ID NCT03436654
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving a mix of hormone-lowering medications (apalutamide, abiraterone, prednisone, and a GnRH drug) for a few months before surgery can shrink very high-risk prostate cancer and reduce the chance of it coming back. About 102 men with localized or low-volume metastatic prostate cancer are participating. The approach combines drugs, surgery, and possibly radiation to attack the cancer from multiple angles.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Apalutamide, abiraterone acetate, prednisone, and GnRH agonist/antagonist
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this combination approach could significantly lower the chance of prostate cancer returning after treatment.
- What could go wrong
- This is a phase 2 trial with only 102 participants, so results are preliminary. The treatment involves multiple drugs and procedures, which may cause side effects and may not work for everyone.
