New combo therapy aims to shrink aggressive prostate cancer before surgery
NCT ID NCT03436654
First seen Jan 06, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 27 times
Summary
This study tests whether giving a mix of hormone-lowering medications (apalutamide, abiraterone, prednisone, and a GnRH drug) for a few months before surgery can shrink very high-risk prostate cancer and reduce the chance of it coming back. About 102 men with localized or low-volume metastatic prostate cancer are participating. The approach combines drugs, surgery, and possibly radiation to attack the cancer from multiple angles.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Apalutamide, abiraterone acetate, prednisone, and GnRH agonist/antagonist
What this could lead to
If successful, this combination approach could significantly lower the chance of prostate cancer returning after treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 2 trial with only 102 participants, so results are preliminary. The treatment involves multiple drugs and procedures, which may cause side effects and may not work for everyone.
Conditions
