Which radiation boost is better for prostate cancer? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT01936883
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This trial compares two types of brachytherapy boost (HDR vs LDR) given alongside external beam radiation for intermediate- and high-risk prostate cancer. The goal is to see which one provides better cancer control and quality of life with fewer side effects. About 195 men are taking part, and researchers are tracking their urinary, bowel, and sexual function over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
radiation (brachytherapy boost)
What this could lead to
If HDR brachytherapy works better, it could offer similar cancer control with fewer side effects and better quality of life for men with prostate cancer.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-sized trial (195 people) comparing two established treatments, so major breakthroughs are unlikely. Results may not apply to all prostate cancer patients.
