Which radiation approach spares prostate cancer Patients' bladder function?
NCT ID NCT02692105
First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two types of radiation therapy for men with favorable or low-tier intermediate risk prostate cancer: low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy, which uses permanent radioactive seeds, and high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, which uses temporary radioactive material. The main goal is to see which approach better preserves urinary quality of life. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatments and followed for up to three years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy with permanent radioactive seeds or high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy with temporary radioactive material
What this could lead to
If successful, this trial could show that HDR brachytherapy offers better urinary quality of life than the current standard LDR brachytherapy for men with early-stage prostate cancer.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Both treatments involve radiation risks, and the trial may not find a meaningful difference in outcomes.
