New 3D imaging technique could improve care for ARDS patients

NCT ID NCT07083973

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study will use a 3D electrical impedance tomography (EIT) device to monitor how lung ventilation and blood flow change when ARDS patients are placed on their stomach (prone position). Researchers will track 30 patients on mechanical ventilation at three time points: lying on their back, 30 minutes after turning prone, and after more than 10 hours prone. The goal is to see if 3D EIT provides better information than standard 2D EIT for guiding treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could improve how doctors monitor lung function in ARDS patients during prone positioning, potentially leading to better treatment adjustments.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early observational study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to all ARDS patients. It does not test a new treatment or cure.
