Probiotics may boost recovery after joint infection surgery
NCT ID NCT06919913
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether taking a daily probiotic capsule (Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG) for six weeks after surgery can improve immune markers and recovery in people treated for a hip or knee joint infection. About 152 adults aged 18–90 will be enrolled. Researchers will measure blood markers of inflammation, patient-reported pain and function, and any complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG probiotic (Culturelle)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to boost recovery and reduce complications after joint infection surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage study with no phase designation, so results are uncertain. Probiotics may not meaningfully change immune markers or outcomes, and individual responses can vary.
