Can a probiotic shield kids from antibiotic side effects?

NCT ID NCT07015736

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving a probiotic (Saccharomyces boulardii) along with a common antibiotic can protect the gut bacteria of children aged 4 to 12 being treated for ear or sinus infections. The goal is to see if it reduces antibiotic-associated diarrhea and limits the spread of antibiotic-resistant genes. One hundred children will receive either the antibiotic alone or with the probiotic for 10 to 21 days.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745 (a probiotic yeast)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that taking a probiotic alongside antibiotics helps prevent diarrhea and keeps the gut microbiome healthy in children.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 100 children, so results may not apply to everyone. The probiotic might not reduce diarrhea or could cause side effects like bloating.
