Smartphone app and local health workers team up to fight heart disease

NCT ID NCT05511701

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a program that combines a mobile health app, community health workers, and text message reminders to help people lower their risk of heart disease. About 968 adults in Argentina who are at high risk will take part. The goal is to see if this approach can improve blood pressure, cholesterol, and overall heart health over 12 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

mHealth app, community health worker visits, electronic decision support, SMS reminders, and point-of-care cholesterol testing

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a practical, low-cost way to reduce heart disease risk in underserved communities using mobile technology and local health workers.

What could go wrong

This is a behavioral intervention trial, not a drug study, so results may vary by setting. The 12-month follow-up is relatively short, and long-term benefits are uncertain.
