Could a diabetes drug boost bariatric surgery results?
NCT ID NCT06721507
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether taking tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound) for three months before bariatric surgery reduces inflammation and leads to better weight loss and fewer complications. Fifty adults with obesity scheduled for surgery will either receive the drug or standard diet and lifestyle advice. Researchers will measure inflammatory markers in blood and tissue, and track weight and surgical outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
tirzepatide (also known as Mounjaro, Zepbound)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a standard approach of using tirzepatide before bariatric surgery to reduce inflammation and improve recovery and long-term health.
What could go wrong
This is a small early-phase trial with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Tirzepatide can cause side effects like nausea and vomiting, and it is not yet known if it truly improves surgical outcomes.
