Prepping for surgery: could exercise and diet before the knife cut complications?

NCT ID NCT07638410

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether a prehabilitation program—including physical therapy, dietary advice, and emotional support—given before major cancer surgery can reduce deaths and serious complications within 30 days after the operation. About 180 adults with cancers of the pancreas, colon, stomach, esophagus, bladder, or ovary will take part while receiving pre-surgery treatment. Their recovery will be compared to similar patients who had standard care in the past.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Multidisciplinary Prehabilitation Program (physical therapy, nutrition counseling, health psychology support)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that preparing the body and mind before surgery helps patients recover faster and have fewer serious complications.
What could go wrong
This is an early study comparing results to past patients, not a randomized trial. The program requires extra time and effort, and may not significantly improve outcomes for everyone.
