New study aims to end guesswork in atrial fibrillation treatment

NCT ID NCT05084495

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study followed 50 atrial fibrillation patients for 12 months to see if advanced heart imaging and ECG tests can predict whether the drug flecainide will keep their heart in normal rhythm. Researchers collected data during four clinic visits and analyzed it against outcomes like side effects and rhythm control. The goal is to move away from trial-and-error prescribing and give the right treatment to the right patient from the start.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors predict which atrial fibrillation patients will benefit from flecainide, reducing side effects and improving treatment success.

What could go wrong

This is a small observational study, not a treatment trial. The findings may not apply to all patients and need confirmation in larger studies.
