Blood ratios may predict lung failure in burned kids
NCT ID NCT07414056
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether two simple blood test results—the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio—can help predict which children with severe burns will develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a serious lung condition. Researchers will follow 60 children aged 1-12 with burns covering 20-40% of their body. The goal is to find early warning signs so doctors can act faster.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a simple, early way to predict which burned children are at risk of severe lung failure, allowing faster, more targeted care.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early study with only 60 children. The blood ratios may not be accurate enough to reliably predict ARDS in all cases, and results may not apply to other burn types or ages.
