Could a simple salt swap lower blood pressure in kidney transplant patients?

NCT ID NCT07178964

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether using a potassium-enriched salt substitute (75% regular salt, 25% potassium chloride) instead of regular table salt can help control blood pressure in kidney transplant recipients. About 80 participants will use either the special salt or regular salt at home for 12 weeks. The main goal is to see if blood pressure improves without causing dangerously high potassium levels.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

potassium-enriched salt substitute (25% potassium chloride, 75% sodium chloride)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple dietary swap to help kidney transplant patients better control their blood pressure without extra medication.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 80 participants, so results may not apply broadly. There is a risk of dangerously high potassium levels (hyperkalemia) in some patients.
