Can a simple fluoride treatment save teeth after cancer radiation?

NCT ID NCT07556367

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study looks at whether giving fluoride varnish during regular cancer checkups can help protect the teeth of head and neck cancer patients who have had radiation and lack easy access to a dentist. About 43 uninsured or underinsured adults will receive 4-5 fluoride treatments, complete surveys, and provide saliva samples. The goal is to see if this approach is practical and might improve dental health.

Active substance

fluoride varnish treatment

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that providing fluoride varnish during routine cancer visits is a practical way to improve dental health in underserved patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 43 participants, so results may not apply broadly. It focuses on feasibility, not on proving the varnish prevents cavities.
