Massive study reveals hidden toll of ICU on ARDS survivors

NCT ID NCT06272942

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study reviewed medical records of over 640,000 people in the US who had acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and were in the ICU. Researchers wanted to find out what new health problems—physical, mental, or emotional—arise after such a stay, known as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). By comparing data from before and after the ICU stay, they hope to identify patterns that could lead to earlier treatment and better care.
