Could slower breathing on ventilators save lungs? small study aims to find out
NCT ID NCT07077174
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests whether using a lower breathing rate on ventilators is safe and practical for critically ill patients. About 56 adults on breathing machines will be randomly assigned to either the new lower-rate approach or standard care. The goal is to see if the new method can be used without causing harm, which would then allow a larger trial to test if it improves patient outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
permissive lung-protective ventilation (a ventilator setting with a lower breathing rate)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could pave the way for a larger trial that may show a better way to ventilate ICU patients, potentially reducing lung damage.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early pilot study with only 56 patients. It is designed to test feasibility and safety, not effectiveness, so it may not lead to changes in practice.
