Gum disease breakdown? new peptide gel aims to regrow bone
NCT ID NCT07581613
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a new gel made from peptides (protein fragments) to see if it can help regrow bone and tissue damaged by gum disease. Forty adults with advanced periodontitis will receive either the new peptide gel or a standard hyaluronic acid gel during surgery. Researchers will track bone healing and gum attachment over one year to compare safety and effectiveness.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
proline-rich peptide hydrogel (PeriHeal)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new option to help regrow bone and tissue lost to gum disease, potentially improving tooth support.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 1/2 trial with only 40 people, so results are preliminary. The new hydrogel may not work better than existing treatments, and side effects are still being studied.
