Which nerve block wins for hip surgery pain?
NCT ID NCT06003738
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial compares two types of ultrasound-guided nerve blocks—pericapsular nerve group (PENG) and fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB)—for pain relief after total hip replacement surgery. Adults aged 18 to 80 scheduled for hip replacement under spinal anesthesia will be randomly assigned to receive one of the two blocks. Researchers will measure pain levels over 24 hours, the amount of rescue pain medication needed, and how quickly patients can walk again. The goal is to see which block provides better pain control and faster recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Two types of ultrasound-guided nerve blocks: pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block and fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB)
- What this could lead to
- If one block proves better, it could lead to improved pain control and faster recovery for people undergoing hip replacement surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage comparison, and results may not apply to all patients. Nerve blocks carry risks like bleeding, infection, or nerve damage, though rare.
