Which painkiller wins after hysterectomy? a Head-to-Head test
NCT ID NCT06837506
First seen Aug 12, 2026 · Last updated Aug 13, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial compares two ways to manage pain after an open total abdominal hysterectomy: an ultrasound-guided rectus sheath block (a numbing injection into the abdominal wall) versus intrathecal morphine (a spinal injection). About 80 women aged 18-65 will be randomly assigned to one of the two methods. The goal is to see which approach provides better pain relief, reduces the need for extra morphine, and has fewer side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Ultrasound-guided rectus sheath block with bupivacaine 0.25% versus intrathecal morphine
- What this could lead to
- If one method proves superior, it could become the preferred standard for managing pain after open hysterectomy, potentially reducing opioid use and side effects.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center trial, so results may not apply broadly. Both methods carry risks like infection, bleeding, or allergic reactions, and pain relief may vary between individuals.
