New hip pain block could cut opioid use in ER
NCT ID NCT05673486
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a PENG nerve block—a targeted injection of anesthetic around the hip—can reduce pain and the need for morphine in adults with hip fractures in the emergency department. 36 patients were randomly assigned to receive either the block plus standard care or standard care alone. The goal was to see if the block provides better pain control and lowers opioid use.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
PENG nerve block (anesthetic injection around hip nerves)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a better, faster way to manage hip fracture pain in the ER with less need for strong opioids.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early study with only 36 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The evidence for PENG blocks in the ER is still weak.
