Nudge tool aims to cut unnecessary CT scans for lung clots

NCT ID NCT07249385

First seen Jan 08, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study tests a computer tool that gently reminds doctors when they are about to order a CT scan for a possible pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung) against clinical guidelines. The tool only appears when the order may not be needed, giving doctors a chance to reconsider. About 440 healthcare providers across 10 emergency rooms will use the tool, and researchers will track whether it leads to more appropriate CT scan use.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Clinical decision support tool with behavioral nudges

What this could lead to

If it works, this could reduce unnecessary CT scans and radiation exposure for patients with suspected pulmonary embolism.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage implementation study, not a treatment trial. The nudge may not change doctor behavior, or results may not apply to other hospitals.
