Spotting hidden blood clots in scarred lungs: a study hunts for clues

NCT ID NCT07728448

First seen Jul 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 28, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

People with interstitial lung disease (ILD) can suddenly get much worse, but it is hard to tell if the cause is a lung flare-up or a blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). This observational study will follow 70 adults with ILD who come to the hospital with worsening breathing and need a special CT scan to check for clots. Researchers will compare those with and without a clot to find better ways to predict who is at risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors diagnose dangerous blood clots faster and more accurately in patients with chronic lung disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small observational study, so findings may not apply to all patients. It does not test a new treatment, only looks for patterns.
