Could a cholesterol protein worsen kidney disease? new study investigates
NCT ID NCT06373913
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether a protein called PCSK9, which helps control cholesterol, is linked to kidney damage in people with nephrotic syndrome. Researchers will measure PCSK9 levels in the blood and kidney tissue of 75 participants, comparing those with the condition to healthy controls. The goal is to better understand why high cholesterol occurs in nephrotic syndrome and whether PCSK9 plays a role in kidney injury.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help explain why high cholesterol occurs in nephrotic syndrome and point toward new ways to protect the kidneys.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study with only 75 participants, so it cannot prove cause and effect. Results may not lead to any treatment.
