Patch test could reveal hidden food triggers for IBS sufferers
NCT ID NCT06288672
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether avoiding foods identified by a skin patch test can improve irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. 250 adults with IBS will undergo patch testing for 80 foods and then follow either a true avoidance diet (avoiding foods they are allergic to) or a sham diet (avoiding other foods) for 16 weeks. Neither participants nor doctors know which diet is assigned. The goal is to see if the patch test-guided diet leads to better symptom relief.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
food avoidance diet
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, non-drug way to manage IBS symptoms by identifying and avoiding trigger foods.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with no phase designation, and the sham diet may also provide relief, making it hard to prove the patch test's value. The diet is only 16 weeks, so long-term effects are unknown.
