Glow-in-the-Dark dye could help detect oral cancer

NCT ID NCT03085147

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Aug 05, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests a fluorescent dye called PARPi-FL that may make oral cancer cells glow during an endoscopic exam. About 23 people with oral squamous cell carcinoma will gargle the dye before surgery, and doctors will check for safety and how well the dye highlights tumors. It is the first human test of this dye, so the main goals are safety and finding the best dose.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
PARPi-FL (a fluorescent dye)
What this could lead to
If successful, this dye could help doctors spot oral cancers more clearly during routine exams, potentially leading to earlier detection.
What could go wrong
This is an early phase trial with only 23 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The dye might not work well for all tumor types or locations.
