Pancreatic cancer surgery upgrade: remove the whole pancreas, then transplant its own cells to avoid diabetes
NCT ID NCT05116072
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a two-step surgery for people with pancreatic or related cancers. Instead of the standard partial removal, doctors remove the entire pancreas and then transplant the patient's own insulin-making cells into the liver. The goal is to prevent a common complication (pancreatic leak) that often stops chemotherapy, while also avoiding severe diabetes. The trial will enroll 36 adults and track how many complete their planned chemotherapy.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- islet cells (transplanted into the liver)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this approach could help more patients finish chemotherapy after pancreatic cancer surgery while avoiding severe diabetes.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-phase trial with only 36 people. The surgery is major, and the islet transplant may not always work well, leaving some patients dependent on insulin.
