Can more radiation zap cancer pain faster?

NCT ID NCT05419518

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests whether a higher dose of radiation (40-50 Gy over 10 sessions) can better relieve pain from cancer that has spread to bones or other areas. Researchers hope to double the complete pain response rate at one month compared to standard doses. The study involves 124 adults with a life expectancy of at least six months and aims to balance pain relief with safety.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

external beam radiation

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a more effective and longer-lasting pain relief option for people with cancer that has spread to bones or other tissues.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase trial with only 124 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Higher radiation doses also carry increased risk of side effects like fatigue or local tissue damage.
