Could a steroid shot before lung surgery slash painkiller use?

NCT ID NCT07603921

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether injecting a steroid (triamcinolone) plus a numbing drug (ropivacaine) into the incision site before lung surgery can reduce pain and the need for morphine afterward. About 100 adults having keyhole lung surgery will be randomly assigned to get either the combination or the numbing drug alone. The goal is to see if the combo provides longer-lasting pain relief with fewer side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ropivacaine plus triamcinolone

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a simple, safer way to reduce pain and the need for strong painkillers after lung surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 100 people. The added steroid may not improve pain relief or could cause side effects like infection or delayed healing.
