Which painkiller wins after hernia surgery? new trial tests BDE vs exparel
NCT ID NCT07518238
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 2 trial compares two numbing medications—BDE (a mix of bupivacaine, dexamethasone, and epinephrine) and Exparel—to see which one reduces pain better after hernia surgery. About 128 adults having abdominal wall reconstruction will receive one of the drugs during a nerve block. Researchers will measure pain levels, how much extra pain medication is needed, and how long patients stay in the hospital.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Bupivacaine, Dexamethasone, Epinephrine (BDE) and Exparel (liposomal bupivacaine)
- What this could lead to
- If this works, it could show which numbing medication provides better pain relief and faster recovery after hernia surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 128 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The study is still enrolling, and it's unclear if one drug is clearly better.
