Botox injection before hernia surgery may reduce need for risky muscle cuts
NCT ID NCT07628205
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Italian study tests whether injecting Botulinum Toxin A (Botox) into the abdominal muscles weeks before surgery can relax them, making it easier to close large hernias. Researchers will measure changes in CT scans and see if this reduces the need for complex surgical techniques. The trial enrolls 44 adults with large ventral or incisional hernias.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Botulinum Toxin A (Botox)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could make complex hernia surgery simpler and safer by relaxing the abdominal muscles beforehand.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 44 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Botox injections carry risks like muscle weakness or allergic reaction.
