New study tests better pain relief after liver surgery
NCT ID NCT03238430
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at two methods to control pain after liver surgery: continuous wound infiltration with a local anesthetic (ropivacaine) and a single spinal injection of morphine. The goal was to see which approach reduces the need for additional morphine and lowers the chance of chronic pain at 3 and 6 months after surgery. A total of 186 patients took part, and the results could help improve recovery after liver operations.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ropivacaine and intrathecal morphine
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that one of these methods is better at controlling pain after liver surgery, reducing the need for morphine and lowering the risk of long-term pain.
What could go wrong
This is a completed Phase 2/3 trial with 186 participants, so results are available but may not apply to all patients. The study compares existing techniques, so no breakthrough is expected.
