New pain cocktail could ease suffering after cancer amputation

NCT ID NCT07276867

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two spinal anesthesia recipes for people having a leg amputated above the knee due to sarcoma (a type of cancer). One group gets the standard fentanyl plus bupivacaine, the other gets an added drug called dexmedetomidine. The goal is to see if the combo delays the need for rescue morphine after surgery. About 58 adults aged 18–60 are being enrolled in Egypt.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Dexmedetomidine and fentanyl

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a better way to manage pain after leg amputation for sarcoma, reducing the need for strong painkillers like morphine.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 58 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The added drug may not improve pain relief and could cause side effects like slow heart rate or low blood pressure.
