New pain shot could cut opioid use after eye removal

NCT ID NCT02381353

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares a standard painkiller (bupivacaine) to a slow-release version (Exparel) for pain after eye removal surgery. 88 adults having their eye removed at Mayo Clinic will receive one of the two injections during surgery. The goal is to see if the slow-release drug provides better pain control for up to 3 days and reduces the need for oral narcotics.
