New pain block may cut opioid use after breast surgery

NCT ID NCT03599635

First seen Jan 03, 2026 · Last updated May 05, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study tested whether a longer-lasting pain medicine (liposomal bupivacaine) works better than standard bupivacaine for controlling pain after breast surgery. 112 adults having partial mastectomy received one of the two medicines via ultrasound-guided injection. The goal was to see if the newer medicine reduces the need for opioid painkillers and lowers pain scores in the days after surgery.
