New pain block study aims to cut opioid use after sleeve gastrectomy

NCT ID NCT07547280

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study will compare two ultrasound-guided nerve blocks—the external oblique intercostal plane block and the subcostal transversus abdominis plane block—for controlling pain after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Ninety adults aged 18–65 will receive one of the blocks plus standard local anesthetic. The goal is to see which block provides better pain relief and reduces the need for opioid painkillers.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If one block works better, it could mean less pain and fewer opioids after weight-loss surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (90 people) comparing two established techniques, so major breakthroughs are unlikely. Results may not apply to other surgeries.
