Eyedrop lifts droopy eyelids after facial paralysis?
NCT ID NCT05945615
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested an FDA-approved eyedrop (oxymetazoline 0.1%) in 36 adults with eyelid droop caused by facial nerve miswiring after paralysis. The goal was to see if the drop could temporarily raise the eyelid, improve vision, and reduce abnormal muscle spasms. Researchers measured changes in eyelid position, facial function, and quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Oxymetazoline 0.1% ophthalmic solution (Upneeq)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple eyedrop treatment to temporarily lift the eyelid and improve vision and appearance in people with eyelid droop after facial paralysis.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 36 participants. The medication is already FDA-approved for other causes of eyelid droop, but its effect on droop due to nerve miswiring may be limited or not last long.
