Could oral cancer surgery become a Same-Day procedure?

NCT ID NCT03545256

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study is testing whether people with early-stage oral or throat cancer (T1-N0 or T2-N0) can safely have their tumor removed as an outpatient, going home the same day. The procedure also includes a sentinel lymph node biopsy to check for cancer spread. Researchers will track how many patients need to be admitted or readmitted within 10 days due to complications. About 25-30 adults with operable squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity or oropharynx are being enrolled.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

outpatient surgery with sentinel lymph node biopsy

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that outpatient surgery is a safe and practical option for certain early-stage oral cancers, reducing hospital stays and healthcare costs.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study (25-30 people) with no comparison group, so results may not apply broadly. Complications could still require unplanned hospital admission.
