Could a Half-Dose strategy prevent bone loss after stopping osteoporosis meds?
NCT ID NCT07281586
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a gradual reduction of denosumab (Prolia) combined with zoledronic acid (Aclasta) can prevent bone loss after long-term osteoporosis treatment. 44 postmenopausal women and men over 50 who have taken denosumab for at least 3 years will be randomly assigned to either standard care or a de-escalation approach. The goal is to see if the new strategy better preserves bone density in the spine over two years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- denosumab (half-dose) and zoledronic acid
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a safer way to stop long-term osteoporosis treatment without losing bone density.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 44 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The de-escalation strategy might not prevent bone loss as hoped.
