Eye ultrasound may reveal hidden brain pressure disorder

NCT ID NCT07085260

First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether measuring the optic nerve sheath diameter—the lining around the nerve that connects the eye to the brain—using ultrasound can help doctors know if a treatment for spontaneous intracranial hypotension (a condition where low spinal fluid causes severe headaches) is effective. Researchers will measure this diameter before, right after, and two weeks after an epidural blood patch procedure in 23 adults. They will also track headache severity and quality of life to see if changes in the nerve sheath match symptom improvement.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

epidural blood patch

What this could lead to

If successful, this could establish a simple ultrasound measurement as a way to track whether treatment is working in patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension.

What could go wrong

This is a small observational study with only 23 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The measurement technique may not prove reliable enough for routine use.
