New camera could save hearts: OCTAVE trial tests smarter stent placement
NCT ID NCT07422688
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether using a special camera (OCT) inside the heart's arteries during a heart attack procedure leads to better outcomes than the standard X-ray method. About 3000 people having a heart attack will be randomly assigned to one of the two approaches. The goal is to see if OCT guidance reduces deaths, heart attacks, and strokes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging guidance during stent placement
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that using OCT imaging during heart attack procedures reduces the risk of death, heart attacks, and strokes compared to standard X-ray guidance.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial, but OCT is an additional procedure that may not improve outcomes enough to justify its cost and time. There is also a risk of complications from the imaging itself.
