Gut bacteria may hold key to Obesity-Related insulin resistance
NCT ID NCT06768827
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at how the fermentation of food in the gut affects metabolism in young people aged 15–22 with obesity. Researchers will give participants a sugar called lactulose to trigger fermentation and measure changes in fat breakdown and sugar production. The goal is to understand why some people with obesity develop insulin resistance, which can lead to diabetes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- lactulose
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help explain why some people with obesity develop insulin resistance and point to new ways to prevent or manage it.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early, small observational study (55 participants) that does not test a treatment. It may not lead to any direct benefit for participants or translate into real-world changes.
