Simple blood test could spot Crohn's and colitis earlier
NCT ID NCT03833310
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looked at four substances in the blood (Osteoprotegerin, sRANKL, NFkB, and TFF3) to see if they could help diagnose inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Researchers measured these markers in 70 newly diagnosed patients before and after treatment. The goal is to find a noninvasive, accurate way to diagnose IBD without relying solely on endoscopy.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Blood test measuring Osteoprotegerin, sRANKL, NFkB, and TFF3
What this could lead to
If successful, these blood markers could help doctors diagnose Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis more accurately and less invasively.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 70 participants. The markers may not prove accurate enough for routine use, and results need confirmation in larger trials.
