Can Non-Opioid painkillers replace opioids after ankle surgery?
NCT ID NCT07154433
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a non-opioid pain regimen (celecoxib plus acetaminophen) works as well as an opioid regimen (oxycodone plus acetaminophen) for pain after ankle arthroscopy. 112 adults were randomly assigned to one of the two groups. The goal is to find a safer way to manage pain and reduce opioid-related risks like addiction and breathing problems.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
celecoxib and acetaminophen (non-opioid regimen) vs oxycodone and acetaminophen (opioid regimen)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a non-opioid pain plan works just as well as opioids after ankle surgery, with fewer side effects like addiction or breathing problems.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with 112 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Non-opioid drugs can still cause side effects like stomach bleeding or liver issues.
