New MRI scan could spare kidney transplant patients painful biopsies
NCT ID NCT07333495
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether advanced, non-contrast MRI scans can safely and accurately monitor the health of transplanted kidneys. Currently, doctors rely on blood tests and invasive biopsies, which can miss early signs of trouble. Researchers will scan 1000 participants, including both kidney donors and recipients, to see if MRI can detect problems like rejection earlier and more precisely. If it works, this could lead to a gentler, more personalized way to care for transplant patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- non-contrast functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could replace invasive biopsies with a simple MRI scan to catch kidney transplant problems early, improving long-term outcomes.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early exploratory study, so the MRI method may not prove accurate enough to replace current tests. Results may vary across different hospitals and patient groups.
