Meth treatment study explores whether less use, not just no use, improves health
NCT ID NCT07226596
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether reducing methamphetamine use—without requiring complete abstinence—can improve health and quality of life. Researchers will give 300 adults with methamphetamine use disorder payments for providing drug-free urine samples over 12 weeks. They will measure blood pressure, sleep, and other health markers to see if less use leads to real benefits. The goal is to change how treatment success is measured, making it easier to develop new therapies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Contingency Management (behavioral intervention with payments for negative urine samples)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that reducing methamphetamine use (not just quitting) is a valid treatment goal, leading to more flexible and accessible therapies.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage behavioral study, not testing a drug. Results may not change current treatment standards, and participants may relapse after payments stop.
