Could a vitamin pill slow Parkinson's? major trial tests nicotinamide riboside
NCT ID NCT03568968
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed Phase 3 trial tested whether a daily supplement called nicotinamide riboside (a form of vitamin B3) can slow the progression of early Parkinson's disease. 410 people with early-stage Parkinson's took either the supplement or a placebo for 52 weeks. Researchers measured changes in motor and non-motor symptoms using a standard rating scale. The goal was to see if replenishing a key cellular energy molecule (NAD) could help protect brain cells.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
nicotinamide riboside (a form of vitamin B3)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a way to slow the progression of early Parkinson's disease using a simple dietary supplement.
What could go wrong
This is a completed Phase 3 trial, but results are not yet published. The supplement may not slow the disease, and benefits may be small or not apply to all patients.
